Second Grade PE Week Four

fitness4Physical Education Activities - Week Four

This week we will work on our weight transfer skills.
Then, we will combine them with some balances we did last week to create an obstacle course and meet the learning goal of this unit.

Unit Learning Goals:

  • Students live an active lifestyle and know how to stay fit and healthy.
  • Students will be able to combine balance and weight transfers with movement concepts to create and complete an obstacle course.
  • Students can express the enjoyment and/or challenge of participating in a favorite physical activity.

Health Focus:

Last week we focused on developing a routine. What is going well with your routine? What do you need to work on?

This week our health focus is on getting enough sleep.

  • Did you know having a major change in your life or daily routine can easily cause sleep problems? During this difficult time, it is important to get enough sleep.
  • Sleep gives your body a rest and allow it to get ready for the next day. It is like giving your body a little vacation. Sleep gives your brain a chance to sort things out. Set yourself a goal to get around 9-12 hours each night.
  • Getting a good night's sleep is very important for your health and happiness. If you don't get enough sleep you may find it difficult to; pay attention, have the energy to play, fight germs and illness, and remember important information.
  • Try and fill out each part of this sleep diary for the next week.

Activities to Practice an Obstacle course:

Here are the balance and weight transfer skills you have learned. There are also some ideas for transitions and jumps. When you create your obstacle course, you will have to include transitions (how you will get from one move to another move). You may use dance, steps, or ideas from this chart. Practice your skills and think about which ones you would like to use in your routine!

It is now time to set up your obstacle course, use different items to travel over, around, and through your obstacle course. These objects can be anything around your house. Be creative and be safe.

Use animal walks and different gymnastic moves to help you get from your start to your finish line.

Activity 4- Create your Obstacle Course

This is your final activity for the unit. You get to put all of your creativity and knowledge into practice. Put together your favorite balances and weight transfer skills in a sequence to complete your obstacle course. Use the chart below to help you plan your routine. Try challenging yourself.  Add different items from around your house to jump over, go around, under, and maybe even through. Some ideas could be your backpack, pillows, stuffed animal, a blanket, a pair of shoes, or a cardboard box. Identify a start and a finish line for your obstacle course.

Bonus: You can find a printed version of this chart in your Week 7 printed materials.
