Help your child:

  • Sing the Gertie Goose song.

  • Look for the letter G in your house.
  • Think of a word that starts with the same sound as the word GOOSE (like go, glass, goldfish).

Letter Hunt around the house:

Have your child look for the following letters around the house:

S, P, T, O, X, U, Y, W, F, A, Z, B, M, R, C, Q, V, J, H

  • This could include looking for letters in the cupboards on food labels, canned food, magazines, and books.
  • If your child is just beginning to recognize letters, have them look for just one letter at a time.
  • If your child recognizes many letters, give them a short list of letters to look for. They can cross out each letter as they find it.

Play Plans

Making a Play Plan

Once a day, have your child make a plan before they play.

Before they put anything on paper have your child say their plan to you.

  • The plan should be one sentence.
  • The sentence should start with "I am going to"
  • It should be something they can actually do, for example "I am going to play with blocks." or "I am going to do a puzzle."

Step 1: Your child draws a picture of what they plan to do.

Step 2: Your child draws a line for each word in the sentence they want to write.  The sentence should start with the words: I am going to

Step 3:  Your child writes the words of their sentence on the lines. You can help your child try to sound out some letters. It is ok if they are not spelled right, or letters are missing.

Step 4: Your child writes their name at the top. Again, if your child is just learning to write don't worry if it isn't spelled right, or letters are missing.

Step 5: Have your child read their play plan to you.

Step 6: PLAY!
